Automotive Paint/Final Inspection

General Application Summary:

  • Final inspection of a completed automobile is a time-consuming task for an inspector. It involves the inspector to carry a clip board with a form on it to record the 16 digit automobile identification serial number (VIN) upon the arrival of the automobile at the inspection station. He then walks around the automobile to determine the flaws in the exterior parts as well as the final paint finished records the information on the form.
  • There is usually one inspector per automobile at the final inspection station.
  • The data needs to be keyed into a terminal to be transmitted to the central computer for identifying and shipping the appropriate work order for the replacement parts and or the re-work of the paint areas.
  • Using voice, the inspector, wearing a headset and portable data collection terminal "speaks-in" the automobile's VIN that is checked against the central computer for validation prior to him proceeding for the identification of the defective parts and/or the paint areas to be re-worked. If the serial number was not validated the inspector repeats the information. In the current practice of recording on the form on the clip-board as well as a keyboard entry person entering the data to determine the validity of VIN causes time delay in the repair process due to human errors in manual recording.
  • Data is validated instantly, rather than waiting until key entry time.
  • Key entry errors are eliminated.
  • Data can be available real-time for initiating orders to the parts warehouse for their delivery to the re-work area.
  • Typical system payback period is 6-12 months.
  • Speech Interface Design has worked on systems for at least three automotive assembly lines.
